Serving Our Neighbours:
A Simple Act of Love

True Christian service begins when we choose to see the needs of others before our own. Ministry is not always found in large events or public gatherings. Often, it is revealed through simple acts of kindness that speak louder than words. Every visit, every helping hand, and every promise kept becomes a testimony of God's love in action.
Last Tuesday, my wife and I visited a widow who has been unwell for quite some time. We brought her homemade vegetable soup and a nutritious smoothie, hoping to encourage her and remind her that she is not forgotten. Sometimes, a warm meal and a caring visit can bring hope to someone facing loneliness and physical hardship.
While we were there, I noticed that the grass in her front yard had grown tall, and her property needed attention. Before leaving, I promised her that we would return to help clean her yard.
The following day, my wife accompanied her to the hospital. During their visit, my wife reminded me that the widow was looking forward to the help we had promised. Today, with cool and comfortable weather, we returned to keep our word.
"Little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth."

For two and a half hours, we worked hard clearing the front yard and the side of her house. It was physically demanding, but as we looked at the yard afterward, we were reminded that even small acts of service can bring renewed hope. What once looked neglected had become clean and welcoming again, and the smile on her face made every moment worthwhile.
The widow graciously offered to pay us and even wanted to cover the cost of the gasoline. We respectfully declined because our purpose was never to receive anything in return. Love is most meaningful when it is freely given.
Before we left, three young members of the local First Nation community arrived and asked how they could help. We encouraged them to continue cutting the grass at the back of the property, and they gladly agreed to return the next day. It was a beautiful reminder that acts of kindness often inspire others to serve as well. Compassion is contagious. When one person chooses to help, others are encouraged to do the same.
Our work is not yet finished. This coming Sunday, I plan to return to clean her chimney. Last winter, it became blocked, preventing the smoke from escaping properly. Because of this, she had to rely heavily on an electric heater, resulting in expensive heating bills. By cleaning the chimney, we hope to help her safely use her wood stove again and reduce her expenses during the coming winter.
As we reflected on this experience, the words of Scripture came to mind:
"Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ."
— Galatians 6:2 (NKJV)
Serving others is more than completing a task—it is sharing their burdens, easing their struggles, and reminding them that they are not alone. Every act of compassion reflects the heart of Jesus, who came not to be served but to serve.
This simple experience reminded us that mission is not only about preaching sermons but also about living the gospel through practical service. Sometimes, the greatest witness is found in a bowl of soup, a freshly cut lawn, a repaired chimney, or a promise faithfully kept.
May this story encourage each of us to look beyond our own responsibilities and notice someone who may need a helping hand. Whether it is visiting the lonely, caring for the elderly, encouraging the discouraged, or helping a neighbour with everyday tasks, every act of kindness becomes an opportunity to reveal the love of Christ.
Together, let us continue serving our neighbours with compassion, bearing one another's burdens, and bringing hope to our communities—one simple act of love at a time.
